This is great, any idea where it is?

    [–] sunnydelish 79 points ago

    Houston, Texas

    [–] munkijuice 7 points ago

    Thanks so much!

    [–] DCtoATX 3 points ago

    Where in Houston, OP?

    [–] sunnydelish 17 points ago

Avis Frank Gallery, 1606 White Oak Dr., Houston, TX 77009

Needs to be mass produced and spread. That is one powerful image.

    [–] Leovinus_Jones -17 points ago

So pretty much the last place its going to do any good to its target audience (Muslim women in developing countries.)

    Better than nothing I guess.

was gonna say, isn't good art universal? and besides, it's on the internet...

    [–] Cashews4U -13 points ago

So why not paint it on a normal canvas instead of making a mural for others to see? Clearly the artist wanted people to see it.

    [–] [deleted] 11 points ago

    [deleted]

    [–] Cashews4U -6 points ago

Because as /u/Leovinus_Jones said the target audience for this was wasted being in Houston. Yeah people will see it, but I assume most Americans (especially Texans) don't even know who Malala is, overreact and get offended, or just not give a shit. Whereas in a Muslim society, more people would be receptive to it.

    [–] [deleted] 7 points ago

    [–] Cashews4U -3 points ago

Been to TX, have family in and from Texas, so yes, I know a little bit about it. And I didn't know who she was until today.

    [–] [deleted] 5 points ago

Everyone in America knows who Malala is an I'm offended that you assume we wouldn't.

    [–] Kittens4Brunch 1 points ago

    That's just not true.

    [–] fixedtehknollpost 2 points ago

The area it's located in is one of the most diverse in the entire country. In fact, the county seat of Houston is the one of most diverse in the us. The first most diverse? The county directly to the south.

Remind me, who is the bigot here again you judgmental fuck?

    [–] Cashews4U -1 points ago

Herpderp you're butthurt. The only judgemental bigot is you!

    [–] TheEllimist 9 points ago

Would Muslim women in developing countries know a whole lot about American World War II propaganda?

    [–] JoeyPantz 5 points ago

No but anybody can tell the message conveyed by this piece is "Women are strong too"

    [–] NursinaMichelina 5 points ago

I don't understand why you think Malala's message is only aimed at "Muslim women in developing countries." Maybe if you actually heard or read some of her speeches, you would know that her target audience is not only all young girls, but also young boys. Malala is an advocate for many things, but mostly for education for all children all over the world.

Also - I think this is amazing, regardless of where it is. Malala Yousafzai is a hero and I wish everyone knew who she was because she is that awesome.

    [–] kennewickman 23 points ago

Go fuck yourself. Houston is now the most diverse city in the nation. What matters is that it is out there and besides a tribute is a tribute. Who are you to tell art what to do? You think you own freedom of expression? You are such a utilitarian fuckwad. The purpose of art is to be. You uncouth dumb shit.

Edit:however you contributed to thread and didn't go on a dumb rant like me, upvotes.

    [–] DR_McBUTTFUCK 2 points ago

Do you want people to ask if you're mad? Because thats how you get people to assume that you're mad.

    [–] kennewickman 1 points ago

Mad? It's the internet. If you get mad over a strangers comment then you don't deserve the internet.

    [–] DR_McBUTTFUCK 1 points ago

Right, and so we're assuming those facts about you.

You'd be surprised at how many Muslims live in Houston.

    [–] sunnydelish 4 points ago

Might get the fat cats to donate more money.

( I just saw Charlie Wilson's war, and apparently the Texas 2nd congressional district had a lot to do with Zia Ul Haq and Pakistan )

    [–] Leovinus_Jones 5 points ago

And arming the people who became the Taliban worked out real well.

    [–] ainrialai 6 points ago

Don't tell them that Malala's a communist, then. Last time there were communists trying to improve women's rights in the region, those "fat cats" had a little something to say about it.

    [–] rebelcupcake 1 points ago

Really, where? I wanna find it

    [–] fixedtehknollpost 2 points ago

White Oak @ Houston St. 4 blocks east of Studewood on the old King Biscuit building.

There's several other artists on that building including Weah, Give Up and Ack!

(I'm not asking to be cynical, I just genuinely don't know.)

    [–] Ftumsh 142 points ago

Put herself in the firing line by standing up to tyranny at a very young age, got shot through the head for it, recovered, and immediately put herself back in the firing line by standing up to tyranny again, in an even more vocal manner and in a global context. She's also an excellent public speaker.

    [–] sunnydelish 50 points ago

first result when you google Malala Yousufzai. : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malala_Yousafzai

TLDR :She was a young pakistani girl, that stood up to the taleban.

    [–] kstiney18 46 points ago

And was shot by the Taliban.

    [–] RX_queen 60 points ago

Survived that, and basically told them to eat shoe because she's not afraid of them. She's pretty badass.

    [–] [deleted] 42 points ago

When she was on the Daily Show, when asked what would happen if an armed member of the Taliban burst through her door, her response was, "At first I might throw a shoe, but then I would talk to him about how I don't want education for me. I want it for all children, including his children. And then I would let him do whatever he wanted."

    Badass.

    [–] sneijder -5 points ago

She was asked the same question in all interviews I saw, and gave the same answer.

    [–] Midgard9 13 points ago

    [–] Raticide 20 points ago

    [–] OfficialGarwood 9 points ago

The Nobel peace prize means fuck all. Hell, the European Union won one. A MULTI-NATIONAL ORGANISATION won the award. wtf?!

    [–] 00zero00 1 points ago

They have awarded the prize to organizations before

    [–] Psyqlone 0 points ago

Winning the Nobel Peace Prize would've put her in the company of Le Duc Tho, Henry Kissinger, Yasser Arafat ... and Barack Obama. ...vafanculo.

She should have higher expectations for herself.

    [–] Why_did_I_rejoin 4 points ago

That's a lot more than what the real Rosie ever did.

    [–] misyo 20 points ago

I think it's not so much what the actual Rosie did but the generation of women she represents.

    [–] Why_did_I_rejoin -3 points ago

Let's let the myth get in the way shall we! Sure, it was only a poster that the real person quit after a few short weeks because she was scared of her job. Sure the poster was only seen by Westinghouse employees, in the Midwest, for about 2 weeks. But that doesn't matter! This apparently represents a whole generation of women!

    Really. That's pretty insulting.

    [–] WildeNietzsche 1 points ago

The OP and you are both talking about the We Can Do It poster that wasn't actually meant to be a Rosie The Riveter propaganda poster at all. And that image was only inspired by the photograph of the woman you are talking about, but it was never meant to represent that woman, who had no clue they were going to make the poster at all and doesn't even look much like the original photograph.

    [–] misyo 1 points ago

She represents a whole generation of women who went into industrial manufacturing during the war. The woman in the photo was a model- she's not the important one- it's the women who did the jobs she posed for who are the "Rosie the Riveters". Don't pretend you don't understand that.

    [–] Why_did_I_rejoin 1 points ago

The poster was only rediscovered after about 40 years of complete obscurity and then misappropriated by a bunch of feminists. The women of that generation have no connection or affinity to that poster whatsoever. They would have more of a connection to the Andrews Sisters than that.

    [–] misyo 0 points ago

You're saying women didn't join industrial labor and help war production? Instead they all formed singing trios and toured for the troops in cute little outfits?

    [–] Why_did_I_rejoin 1 points ago

Of course, that's exactly what I'm saying. You've hit the nail square on the head!

More seriously, though. I guess if you want to believe and perpetuate the myth about the poster, by all means do so. It seems that logic and reason aren't going to persuade you.

    [–] misyo 0 points ago

Oh! You were trying to use logic and reason to make a point! Well, good try but I think you need more practice.

    [–] [deleted] -39 points ago

And now she's a PR girl for the Americans. what a fine progression.

i guess someone doesn't read much. read some alex jones: theres evidence of him being a doubleagent while working for the UN. He gives Pakistan info and he gives the American scum info. His daughter was recruited as a feel-good story for the braindead Western audiences when she was a very young child (Exploitation By Any Means) and she was shot deliberately and very accurately so she would survive and be a living martyr for the American colonial cause.

Anyone who reads the lamestream media wont be able to figure this out. The TRUTH comes out when you read alt news sources. s

    [–] theclassicoversharer -2 points ago

I was just thinking about this girl and I have to say that I kind of agree.

People in America use Malala to point to the Taliban and say," look at the evil Taliban! They shot a little girl who just wanted to go to school! They're so... EVIL!!"

Meanwhile, we blow up children with drones and who knows what else, all the time. I'm sure some of those kids just wanted to go to school too.

    [–] Theory5 11 points ago * (lasted edited 9 months ago)

In her country the Talaban vy for control of areas of her country regularly. One of the things they do when they take control of an area is forbid women to go to school. Her area of the country had schools for women, but when the taliban came the schools stopped teaching girls. She stood up to them and went to school anyways. She was on a bus going to school one day when armed gunmen stopped her bus and demanded any women get off. I forget the exact details but she was shot in the head.

After she recovered, she fought back, encouraging people to stand up to the Taliban and she still went to school. She is basically a role model for girls everybody everywhere because she was threatened, shot, and continues to be threatened but she goes to school, has a blog, and fights for female education.

    [–] RapidFapMovement 3 points ago

Sick shit.. I can't help but see the parallel to Rosa Parks, standing up for her rights on a bus and all that. Except for the being shot in the head and surviving part.

    [–] Ftumsh 3 points ago

She was on a bus going to school one day when armed gunmen stopped her bus and demanded any women get off.

Nope. More terrifying than that. She was on her school bus. It was stopped by the Taliban specifically to find her and kill her. A gunman got on and said "which one is Malala". She was identified and he shot at her three times. Two bullets missed but one of them penetrated her head and embedded itself in her shoulder.

    [–] TheSmellofPudding 6 points ago

    Be exploited.

    [–] NursinaMichelina 2 points ago

Malala started speaking out against the Taliban and their hostility toward education, especially for young girls, at around 11 or 12 years old. Initially, she used a pseudonym, but the Taliban found out who she was and began threatening her and targeting her. Malala's father opened and ran a school for girls that was run secretly to hide from the Taliban. One day, while coming home from school, her bus was stopped and a Talib came on, asked who she was, and shot her in the face.

Malala is an advocate for education for all children. I really recommend you look up her speech at the UN on her 16th birthday, the day the UN deemed "Malala Day," or her appearance on The Daily Show. Her 17th birthday just passed a few days ago, and she released a statement that is also worth reading. She is amazing.

    [–] sneijder 1 points ago

    Agreed, and I'll be cynical.

When she was doing the the rounds on chat shows to plug her book, she had one story to tell and dragged it out as long as possible.

It's as if there was a big PR machine behind her, and couldn't get it quite right.

    [–] [deleted] -1 points ago

Yeah, I give her props for still saying she's all for women's education even after getting shot but words alone aren't enough to make a difference when you've got some men there who are strictly against it. And the punishment is something we already know from what happened to Malala. Poor girl.

    [–] Kittens4Brunch 1 points ago

I thought that was one of Obama's kids.

    [–] rogercopernicus 1 points ago

Only problem is Malala is actually worth the credit she's given. The woman Rosie the Riveter is based on , Geraldine Doyle, was only a factory worker for two weeks and quit because it was dangerous and could potentially damage her hands(she played the cello). Hardly anyone worth any praise.

    [–] gkalmbach 0 points ago

While I agree that Geraldine was kind of a POS... Rosie was still inspiring during a time of need. We just need to disassociate the two.

The possible model for the poster that is mistakenly called Rosie the Riveter (which wasn't known as that until the 80s) was a 17 year old girl who briefly worked in a plant but quit because she didn't want to injure her hand and destroy her ability to play the cello; however, Rosie the Riveter was never associated with that poster at the time, and is not a real person. It was actually a song that represented millions of women. The poster is likewise symbolic, and was never representative of a real person: once it became associated with the iconography of the "Rosie the Riveter" symbolism, the ideal was looked up to, not the individual (who was not known; it's not even a photograph).

uhhh, okay. the image isn't about one individual woman, it's about all of the women that joined the workforce during the war.

    [–] [deleted] -19 points ago

    [citation needed]

    [–] [deleted] 22 points ago

do you really need a citation for the fact that lots of women joined the workforce during WWII?

    [–] [deleted] -11 points ago

wrong part of the sentence, friend.

    god bless you.

    [–] [deleted] 12 points ago

ok, then you're thick enough to think that WWII propaganda posters really referenced real individuals?

    [–] [deleted] -3 points ago

    [–] [deleted] -2 points ago

yeaaaah Islam, its the reason people threw acid in my face, and I still wear a headscarf and support the religion. Yeaaaah Islaaam

    [–] IroquoisPliskeen 2 points ago

Thats bull. Blame the people who use violence in the name of their religion and not the religion itself. You know why, because at the end of the day its just a bunch of stories and books that no one knows who written them and acting shitty is their own decision. Any religious person acting shitty is acting shitty because they are shitty and not because they have a certain religion. If they were not religious they would also act shitty given the chance.

    [–] [deleted] -1 points ago

Islam is the only religion that consistently ruins lives, Christianity is dead as a social force. Objectivisim is a great way to mask ignorance, but being specific solves problems.

    [–] IroquoisPliskeen 1 points ago

Mate who ruins lives ? Books and fairytales or ignorant human beings ?

    [–] skinnyKss -4 points ago

This is one of those things that pisses me off but shouldn't. That is NOT Rosie the Riveter.

Don't you fucking dare compare Malala to some 1st world, bored, feminist whose main issue in life is that the word women is spelled with a men in it.

    [–] lax_br0 9 points ago

What? Rosie the Riveter was not a real person with values and opinions. She was propaganda for supporting production on the home front.

    [–] VaginalFungus 1 points ago

Shit. It was meant to the be a reply to another comment.
